Bran's Battle AI makes battles more challenging. I like playing minor and emergent factions, using a unit pack makes them more playable.

Įmpire Total Factions offers relatively unmodified game-play (I like the challenge of having to choose between constructing buildings and recruiting units, compared to the higher income available with DarthMod the slower battles with realism mods are interesting but I prefer the faster speed of unmodified battles, especially for sea battles).

I mainly use Empire Total Factions: (Last-updated-17-08-2011) with either the Additional Units Mod or the Minor and Emergent Factions Unit Pack (both are available from, plus Bran's Empire Battle AI. Players also cannot instantly recruit a general with the 'star' button, if I remember correctly. In Imperial Splendour, each faction has its own technology tree and nations cannot trade technologies. This does not matter in large European cities, but in low-population areas such as parts of the Americas, you can only recruit a few units before recruitment becomes impossible. There is also a connection between recruitment and population in Imperial Splendour. The colonies of Britain, France and Spain (Thirteen Colonies, New France and Louisiana) belong to Britain, France and Spain from the start in Imperial Splendour, there are no missions to acquire them. Artillery is much less accurate its purpose is not so much to kill the enemy as to persuade them to advance towards you (for example, so that you can take advantage of defending high ground or the edge of a forest.) Imperial Splendour unlocks at least some minor factions and adds extra units, particularly for major factions. If two units of cavalry charge each other, it is likely that one or both will break immediately. A unit of militia which has no morale bonuses (not near a general, no experience chevrons, not in fortifications or high ground) will have fragile morale even before taking any casualties and will easily break. Unit morale is much more fragile they use morale to represent unit cohesion. In Imperial Splendour, battles (on both land and sea) are much slower than in vanilla (based on the views of the mod creators about the accuracy of ranged weapons in that era). Like Empire Realism, Imperial Splendour is a realism-focused mod. Alternatively, capturing the regions next to the land bridge would probably stop the problem from happening. Sending a ship to sit on the land bridge might help (particularly if you are at war with the Ottomans and if your ship is strong enough to defend itself against their navy). The Ottoman turn can take 30 minutes or longer when this happens. This happens when the Ottoman Empire recruits a huge number of tiny armies, particularly when it tries to send them across the land bridge near Istanbul. Some DarthMod players have reported problems with Ottoman turn lag. A fix for save game corruption is explained here.
If saved games start becoming corrupted, then removing DarthMod and even unintalling and reinstalling Empire Total War will not fix the problem. If you save a campaign with one set of options loaded and then load the campaign with a different set of options loaded, this can (I believe) cause save game corruption. If you try DarthMod, I suggest being careful when using the game-play options in the DarthMod menu.
While I could be wrong, I believe that these factors are why a number of people say that DarthMod makes the game too easy. It also allows some factions to recruit powerful units early in the campaign. DarthMod offers a lot: unlocked factions, more units, improved graphics and sounds, with many game-play options and other features.ĭarthMod also significantly increases your income (you no longer have to choose between improving buildings or recruiting units, or choose between expanding your army or your navy). Yes, it makes sense to check what people say about mods yourself.
